AFF Cup: Thailand - We Came To Indonesia To Win

Thai coach Peter Reid felt Indonesia were somewhat unfortunate in their last group match against Singapore. “They were unlucky against Singapore and got caught on two deadball situations and lost,” said Reid when asked for his thoughts on the Indonesian team.

But in saying what he did, Reid was actually pointing out one of Indonesia’s weaknesses, something he may well exploit in tomorrow’s thrilling first leg AFF Suzuki Cup semifinal showdown at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

“Indonesia have the quality and very good pace upfront. They were quick during attacks and their striker, Bambang, is dangerous.”

Reid added that with the massive home support, it would be a difficult game. “The Indonesian crowd have been fantastic. It will be a big game atmosphere. As a player I used to enjoy the big games and I am sure my players will too. That’s football is all about. But in these games, it’s important not to panic.”

He explained that his players would have to keep their concentration and remain positive throughout. “They have a job to do. My philosophy has always been ‘you attack as a team and you defend as a team’ and that’s what we will set out to do tomorrow.”

The English coach also said that while tomorrow’s match would end after 90 minutes, there was still one more game to go to decide which team will advance to the final. “This game is only half time. Still, we’ve come here looking for a win and I hope to retain our record of not conceding any goals.”

Thailand won all their group matches, against Laos, Vietnam and Malaysia, without letting in any goals.

But Reid is fully aware that Indonesia will want to break that record and go for the win. As the host of the first leg, Indonesia will want to claim victory and take a comfortable lead for the second leg in Bangkok on Dec 20.
