Japan: International Defender Marcus Tulio Tanaka Set For Nagoya Grampus
The defensive lynchpin is on the move...
Japan international defender Marcus Tulio Tanaka is set to
join J-League club Nagoya Grampus.
The 28 year-old star has seen his relationship with Urawa Reds become strained over the years and has chosen Nagoya after being linked with Wigan Athletic of the English Premier League and Dutch club FC Twente.
Nagoya general manager Kazumasa Kume told reporters that Nagoya coach Dragan Stojkovic sold the club to the Brazilian-born defender.
"He met the manager Stojkovic and was told: 'There's a World Cup next year so you should play in Japan' - and that might have helped him decide," said Kume.
"We expect much from him."
Tulio has enjoyed six seasons with Urawa and was involved in the club’s first J-league title in 2006 and the Asian Champions League a year later.
He criticized the club after the sale of Alex Santos to Nagoya last summer and will line up alongside his former team-mate next season as the Aichi club try and land a first league title.
