Korea: Colombian Star Mauricio Molina Puts Seongnam In 2010 Asian Champions League
Seongnam won the battle of the Yellows...
Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma claimed Korea’s
fourth and final spot in next year’s AFC Champions League by beating
Chunnam Dragons 1-0 in the second
round of the K-League playoffs.
Colombia midfielder Mauricio Molina scored the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute.
Seongnam will visit Pohang Steelers in Sunday’s playoff semi-final, with the winners facing Jeonbuk Motors in the two-leg final on December 2 and 6.
Jeonbuk and Pohang finished first and second in the regular-season table to secure their places in the latter stages of the K-League playoffs and secure AFC Champions League berths.
Seongnam had missed out on their first chance to qualify for the continental competition earlier this month when they lost on penalties to Suwon Samsung Bluewings in the FA Cup final, after a 1-1 draw.
The Korean quartet have a formidable record in continental competition.
Jeonbuk won the AFC Champions League in 2006 while Pohang triumphed this year to add to their 1997 and 1998 victories in the former Asian Club Championship.
Seongnam won the Asian Club Championship in 1995 and finished runners-up in 1997 and 2004.
Suwon, the 2008 K-League champions, won the Asian Club Championship in 2001 and 2002.
The draw for the 2010 AFC Champions League, which will again feature eight groups of four teams, will be held on December 7 at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur.
