China: Beijing Guoan Win First Super League Title In Style
A long drought has ended...
Beijing Guoan won their first Chinese Super League title in
style on Saturday by trashing Hangzhou 4-0.
A hat-trick from Honduran striker Emil Martinez thrilled the sell-out crowd in the Chinese capital.
Prior to kick-off, Beijing were on level points with Henan with a superior goal difference but made short work of their opponents who now find themselves relegated.
60,000 fans packed into the Beijing Workers’ Stadium and saw the hosts get off to a perfect start as Martinez struck after four minutes.
The Honduran hitman scored twice in the second half and defender Zhou Ting added a goal from the spot to spark serious celebrations from the home fans.
Almost immediately after Beijing’s opener, there was another reason for the Green Lions to go crazy, as news came through that Hernan Barcos had put Shenzhen a goal ahead from the penalty spot.
Henan crashed to a 3-1 defeat and finished in third. Wang Dong and Ricardo Steer helped Changchun Yatai on the way to a 3-1 win over relegated Chongqing. Changchun managed to take second place.
