With three games of the 2008 season remaining, three points separate the top six as fans in Japan prepare for another dramatic final day.
Kashima dominated the game for large periods but through a combination of the woodwork and good goalkeeping from Takayuki Kitano, they were unable to break the northerners down.
In another shock result, Oita Trinita’s match against JEF United also ended goalless.
Oita could have gone level on points with Kashima at the top. JEF are still fighting for their lives against relegation.
Elsewhere in the day's remaining fixture, Vissel Kobe won 2-0 at Tokyo Verdy to send the hosts closer to the drop zone.
