South Asian champions Maldives are hatching a plan to shoot up FIFA’s rankings.

The men from Male are in the middle of arranging a number of friendly matches against fellow Asian nations in a bid to climb a number of places above the current 156th position.

Sri Lanka and Thailand are possible opponents for the football-crazy island nation.

“Sri Lanka is interested but the date is not yet set,” said the FA of Maldives General Secretary, Shah Ismail, to local media.

“We are trying to arrange the match to be played in the Maldives.

“I think we could arrange a match with Thailand as well. We will explore that possibility as well.”

Maldives will play the matches on designated FIFA days so ranking points and places will be at stake.

“We will arrange the dates in adherence with the FIFA calendar for international friendlies. So that the results are counted and have an impact on our rankings as well,” Ismail added.
