Oblak wants Courtois jersey

The goalkeeper is determined to claim the spot vacated by the Belgium international after he returned to parent club Chelsea on the back of three years at the Vicente Calderon

Jan Oblak admits he is desperate to become Atletico Madrid's No.1 after signing for the club on the back of Thibaut Courtois' return to Chelsea.

The Slovenia international, who has signed for Atletico on a six-year deal from Benfica for €16million, believes the move was a “great decision” and hopes he will eventually become the Spanish side’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The 20-year-old has every chance of doing just that following Thibaut Courtois' return to parent club Chelsea on the back of three years on loan with Atleti, but acknowledges he will have to work hard to make the spot his own.

"I thought that Atletico was the best club for me because I talked to people on the team and I liked what I was told. Coming to Atletico has been a great decision," Oblak told reporters.

"Don’t think that I have come to replace anyone. I'm here, like the other two goalkeepers, to do everything possible to get great results for the team this season and beyond. [Moving to Atletico] is a great opportunity for me.

“I'm not the only goalie, there’s three of us, but I come to train the same as any player on the team and it is my aim to be a regular in the starting XI.”
