Simeone warns Atletico: Treat Elche like our last game of the season

The coach insisted there was no room for complacency as his side prepared for Friday's clash at the Vicente Calderon, despite the prospect of bigger matches in the weeks ahead

Diego Simeone has warned his Atletico Madrid players to treat the Liga clash against Elche as if it is the last match they will play this season.

The coach is demanding that his side are not distracted at all by huge matches against Chelsea, Valencia and Barcelona that remain on the fixture list as the Primera Division and the Champions League titles are decided.

Sitting three points clear at the top of La Liga, Atletico are favourites to be crowned champions of Spain for the first time since the 1995-96 season and can extend that advantage with a successful performance on Friday.

Simeone told reporters: "We do not look at this game against Elche as a chance to move a step closer to the title. We must treat it as the final game of our season.

"We are focused on finding a way of taking control of the game in the direction we want. Then, whatever the result, it will be exaggerated by the media.

"Inside the dressing room, our only concern is how to find a way to win this game in the best possible fashion.

"We must isolate Elche and make sure they cannot get the ball. We have to find the best way to win a difficult game.

"I'm sure they have more than enough in order to survive relegation so they'll try to do their jobs and pick up a point.

"Our only concern is to be able to play our game and try to create the optimum result for our situation."

In-form Atletico are undefeated in 11 matches and know they will win La Liga if they win four of their last five fixtures.
