Basel coach Yakin: We’ll need the fans next time

The Swiss champions beat Valencia 3-0 at St Jakob Park despite the game being behind closed doors but their boss is looking forward to having supporters back
Basel coach Murat Yakin believes his side will need the support of their fans in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final with Valencia.

The Swiss champions beat Los Che 3-0 at St Jakob’s Park in match played behind closed doors after missiles were thrown on the pitch during their previous European home game against Red Bull Salzburg.

Yakin was delighted with how his side fared without their supporters but is looking forward to having them back for next week's trip to Mestalla.

“We heard the fans outside,” the Basel boss told reporters. “They created a good atmosphere, but we’ll need them in the stadium next time.”

Matias Delgado netted a first-half double for the hosts and Yakin was delighted for the 31-year-old Argentine.

“I was very happy for Matias Delgado, who finally scored his goals," he enthused. "That was very important for him personally.

“But, overall, this was a great team effort and everyone played excellently. We’re enjoying this moment very much.”
