Barcelona president Sandro Rosell says Xavi is the inventor of the Tiki Taka philosophy employed so successfully by the Blaugrana and Spain.
The midfielder, who is 34 later this month, admitted recently that he is unsure whether he will be able to finish his career at Camp Nou, but his employer believes the player's enduring importance to the Catalan club cannot be overstated.
Speaking after the player received a 'Fair Play' award from the Barca Players' Group (Agrupacio Barca Jugadors), Rosell said: “Without Xavi, Barca’s game wouldn’t make sense; he is the architect of our style of play.
"It would be harder for the others to score if we didn’t have Xavi in the side; he, along with [Andres] Iniesta, [Sergio] Busquets and [Lionel] Messi invented Tiki Taka – it’s Xavi signature style.
"Barca wouldn’t be the same without him and we’re very proud to have him as part of our family."
Rosell also claims that the stats show that Xavi has to be regarded as the best Spanish player of all time.
"He is a true legend of Barcelona," the Blaugrana supremo enthused. "Time will put everything in its place and in years to come, we will look back on what he has done and say to ourselves, ‘What an amazing player!’
“I’m a big fan of statistics and if we take a look at Xavi’s figures, we’ll see that they don’t lie – Xavi has made almost 700 appearances for Barca and in terms of his numbers, he’s the best Spanish player [ever]."
