thumbnail Hello,

Despite admitting that he had gone too far in his appraisal of the level of competition in the Primera Division, the Argentine maintains that change is required

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has issued an apology for describing La Liga as "boring", admitting that it was a poor choice of words on his part.

Back in August, the Argentine slammed the level of competition within Spanish football due to the dominance of Clasico duo Real Madrid and Barcelona, who have won the last nine Primera Division titles between them.

However, Simeone, whose side currently sit second in La Liga on goal difference, has now had something of a change of heart.

"Possibly the word 'boring' was wrong," the former Rojiblancos midfielder conceded in an interview with Sport.es.

Despite retracting his previous statement, Simeone remains adamant that the imbalance of power within Spain is preventing the Primera Division from reaching its full potential.

“It is a league that gives you very little opportunity," he argued.

"Change is needed in order to make the league more competitive. Especially for the fans; that's what matters in football."

Atletico, who are level on points with Barcelona, and five clear of Madrid, return to Liga action against Malaga on Saturday.
