thumbnail Hello,

Around 45,000 supporters inside Santiago Bernabeu opted for an unusual way to show their backing for the injured Portugal star, who is hoping to land the prestigious accolade

Real Madrid fans have shown their support for Cristiano Ronaldo's bid for this year's Ballon d'Or by wearing special face masks during Wednesday night's Champions League meeting with Galatasaray.

The Portugal international will miss the game with a thigh injury sustained against Almeria at the weekend but his presence will certainly be felt at the Santiago Bernabeu, with approximately 45,000 supporters set to pay tribute to their talismanic No.7 in rather unusual fashion.

Indeed, according to reports, Madrid fans will don the Ronaldo masks in both the seventh and 77th minute of Wednesday's clash as part of a show of solidarity with the injured Portugal captain.

The 28-year-old attacker, who has scored a remarkable 25 goals in 18 games this season, is one of the frontrunners for this year's Ballon d'Or, along with current holder Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery.

Madrid need just a point from their remaining two games against Galatasaray and Copenhagen to secure their place in the next round of the Champions League.
