The fourth round of La Liga saw the first dropped points this season from Real Madrid, with Carlo Ancelotti's side held to a 2-2 draw at Villarreal, while Barcelona left it late to overcome Sevilla in a thrilling encounter at Camp Nou which the Catalans won 3-2 thanks to an Alexis Sanchez strike deep into added time.
Barca now lead La Liga with 12 points, along with Atletico Madrid, who maintained their perfect record with a 4-2 success over Almeria. Elsewhere, there were wins for Malaga, Betis, Getafe, Espanyol and Athletic Bilbao in the Basques' first game at the new San Mames. Here, Goal takes a look at the standout performers from the matchday's action.
In goal, Diego Lopez produced several sensational saves on his return to El Madrigal to frustrate his former club and help earn a point for Madrid.
At the back, Antunes was solid in defence and attacked brilliantly down the left as Malaga thrashed Rayo Vallecano 5-0. Javier Mascherano again impressed for Barcelona, as did Athletic's Andoni Iraola, both in defence and going forward.
In midfield, Cani scored and was a constant threat for Villarreal, while Eliseu linked up superbly with Antunes on the left flank for Malaga. Tiago bossed the midfield for Atletico and was also on target, while Lanzarote starred for Espanyol in the Catalans' win at Granada.
In attack, Lionel Messi was below his best but still scored and set up the winner for Alexis Sanchez. Salva Sevilla was outstanding and netted twice as Betis beat Valencia 3-1, while Mounir El Hamdaoui hit a brilliant hat-trick and bagged an assist on what was a dream debut for Malaga.
