OSASUNA 1-0 RAYO

An early strike from Kike Sola saw Osasuna provisionally move out of the relegation zone with a narrow 1-0 victory over Rayo on Friday evening.

The hosts got off to the perfect start and registered a goal with only five minutes played. Alvaro Cejudo threaded a lovely pass through the middle for Kike, who showed composure to run through on goal and emphatically drill the ball into the top corner.

Rayo came had a couple of opportunities to grab a goal back, but found themselves against an in-form Andres Fernandez, who denied Piti and Leo Baptistao on more than one occasion.

Osasuna held out for the 1-0 win, a victory which saw them extend their unbeaten run in La Liga to four games.

GETAFE 1-0 MALAGA

Getafe joined Malaga on 22 points in the Spanish Primera Division with a 1-0 victory over Manuel Pellegrini’s side at Coliseum Alfonso Perez on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was a relative non-event, with both sides struggling to muster up any kind of threat towards goal. However, the home side took the lead 10 minutes after half-time when Alberto Lopo got beyond the Malaga defenders at the front post to nod home past Willy Caballero.

The capital club have Miguel Moya to thank for the victory, as the Getafe goalkeeper somehow tipped Javier Saviola’s powerful strike onto the bar with 12 minutes remaining.

Diego Castro was sent off in the closing stages after receiving a second booking, but the hosts held on for a vital three points.

VALENCIA 2-5 REAL SOCIEDAD

Real Sociedad defeated Valencia at the Mestalla with a commanding 5-2 victory on Saturday evening, a result that ultimately cost Mauricio Pellegrino his job as manager of Los Che.

The home side actually got off to a fantastic start and took the lead after just two minutes. Benat picked up up the ball on the left and drilled a cross into the box, with Roberto Soldado on hand to finish at the near post. However, things would turn sour for Valencia in the closing stages of the first half. Jonas was sent off for elbowing David Zurutuza and Alberto de la Bella equalised for Sociedad with a lovely finish into the far corner.

The visitors took prospered with their man advantage, and took the lead 10 minutes after the break  when Mikel Gonzalez headed home. Diego Ifran made it 3-1 by taking the ball around Diego Alves and sliding in.

Valencia clawed one back through another nice finish from Soldado but the match was put beyond them in the 83rd minute when Imanol Agirretxe finished after Chori Castro’s knockdown.

Carlos Vela dispatched a penalty in the last minute to make it 5-2, confirming a result that would catalyse Valencia’s new search for a manager.

GRANADA 0-0 ESPANYOL

The relegation dogfight between Granada and Espanyol on Sunday afternoon ended in a goalless 0-0 draw at Estadio Los Carmenes.

A win for either side would have saw them provisionally move out of the bottom three in the Spanish Primera Division, but the match was riddled with tension and nobody could take advantage.

Granada goalkeeper Tono pulled off a save of the highest quality just before the break when he pushed away Christian Stuani’s point-blank header.  It was Espanyol who probably feel they should have won the game as they passed up some excellent opportunities. Mubarak Wakaso had the goal at his mercy but somehow managed to hit a fresh air shot.

The chances for the remainder of the half were few and far between, and both sides ultimately had to settle for a point.

DEPORTIVO 2-3 REAL BETIS

Real Betis moved up to fourth place in the Spanish Primera Division with a 3-2 victory over Deportivo at the Riazor on Sunday night.

Nacho teed up Ruben Castro either side of half-time with excellent crosses from the left and the Betis man grabbed a brace with a fine header and neat finish to put the visitors in a commanding position.

Deportivo showed hunger to get back into the match, and did so thanks to a quickfire double from Riki. The 32-year-old nodded home and the back post and then took advantage of some poor defending to curl the ball into the corner.

However, the Seville side eventually found the winner when Benat fed Joel Campbell through the middle, and the on-loan Arsenal man found the net with a superb whipped shot into the top bag.

CELTA VIGO 1-1 LEVANTE

A last-gasp strike from Roger rescued a point for Levante at Celta Vigo as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in the Spanish Primera Division.

Both sides threatened in the opening period, with Obafemi Martins and Enrique De Lucas both having great chances that went begging. However, the deadlock was broken 37 minutes in when De Lucas latched on to Iago Aspas’ through pass and tucked the ball in the bottom corner.

Celta enjoyed the majority of possession in the second half, and even had a goal disallowed through Mario Bermejo, but Levante grabbed a share of the points in the 89th minute when Roger turned in Michel’s volley to the back post.

MALLORCA 1-1 ZARAGOZA

A Victor Casadesus strike in the closing stages gave Mallorca a vital Spanish Primera Division point as the Islanders drew 1-1 with Real Zaragoza at the Iberostar stadium.

Mallorca had a fantastic chance to take the lead just under a quarter-of-an-hour when Glen Loovens picked up a second booking for fouling Emilio Nsue inside the box. The Zaragoza defender was sent off but Victor missed the subsequent penalty.

Helder Postiga gave Zaragoza a first half lead 16 minutes in when he latched on to a loose ball inside the area and smashed the ball into the bottom corner after a set-piece from the left.

The hosts peppered the opposition goals with shots and would be forgiven for thinking it was not their day. However, five minutes from time, Victor popped up and headed in Giovani Dos Santo’s cross to earn a point for his side.
