Ozil: I would give both Casillas and Ronaldo the Ballon d'Or
The Germany international says he would halve the prestigious prize between his two team-mates, and has admitted that he is not completely happy with his performances of late
Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil has said he would split the Ballon d'Or between team-mates Cristiano Ronaldo and Iker Casillas. The Portugal star stated on Monday that he would vote for himself were it possible, before the Spain goalkeeper stated he would not do so out of professional decency.
However, Ozil believes that both players deserve the accolade after a successful year at both club level which was followed up with eye-catching performances at Euro 2012.
"I want a Real Madrid player to win, so I would give the [award] to the two of them," the 24-year-old told reporters.
"Cristiano is a world-class player and it is showing in the time he has spent here. With Iker there is little left to say, he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. I vote for both as I get on very well with both."
The Germany playmaker also spoke about the criticism he has received recently in certain parts of the Spanish press, and stated that he had to get used to the local media.
"In Spain, when you have a great game you are the best in the world and when you have a bad one it is very serious.
"I've had to get used to that but the only thing that is important to me is what the coach says. I just want to help the team in the best way possible."
