David Villa will be important for Spain again, says Xabi Alonso
By Stefan Coerts
Sep 5, 2012 7:35:00 AM
The Real Madrid midfielder is very pleased with the prolific attacker's comeback, and believes he will soon prove his worth again for the European champions
Xabi Alonso has voiced his delight with David Villa's return to the Spain fold and is confident that the Barcelona attacker will soon play a key role again. The former Valencia star missed Euro 2012 due to a broken leg, but returned to match action for his club earlier this season, and received a recall from Vicente del Bosque for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
"Villa's return is great news. He has been fundamental for us before he got injured and it's great that he has made his comeback," Alonso stated at a press conference.
"He always creates a lot of danger and is a threat to any defence. He always scores a lot of goals, regardless of whether he plays from the wings or as striker.
"It is essential for us that he has returned. We have missed a player like him. I am sure that he will soon be important for the team again."
Spain take on Saudi Arabia on Friday in an international friendly, before kicking off their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign with a trip to Georgia four days later.
