Spain striker Adrian on the hunt for the Golden Boot at Olympics
Atletico's talented young forward is looking to put the disappointment of not making La Roja's European Championship squad behind him by being the top scorer at London 2012
Spain striker Adrian Lopez has said he is eager to please the fans and win the Golden Boot at the Olympics. The Atletico Madrid forward was one of the players cut from Vicente Del Bosque's preliminary squad for Euro 2012, despite impressing in their warm-up friendlies and outshining Fernando Torres. However, while Torres and the other chosen 22 players celebrated their European Championship triumph, Adrian remained at home.
The 24-year-old has now been chosen to be part of Spain's 18-man Olympic squad, and he clearly plans to make the most of it. The Atletico star is confident going into the tournament that he will succeed on both a personal level and as part of a larger team.
"I imagine that all Atletico fans want me to win the Golden Boot at the Olympic Games. They'll be cheering Joel, Koke and me on, because the fans always have our backs and I’m sure they're going to be there supporting us," he was quoted as saying by Marca.
"I feel important, we all are. I've been playing in Spain's youth teams for a long time. Each and every one of us is responsible for us being ready to play and ensuring that things turn out well."
Spain go to London as favourites to win gold, but Adrian insists they must remain composed and focused: "Although we are a very good team capable of anything, in football anybody can beat you."
