Real Madrid improve Di Maria's contract with a further €1m per year - report

The Argentina international has been given a wage increase after impressing for Jose Mourinho's side in his second season with the capital giants

Real Madrid have improved midfielder Angel Di Maria's contract by offering him an additional €1 million per year, according to Spanish newspaper AS.

The former Benfica man, who arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2010, played a vital role in the team's Liga success last season, and has been rewarded handsomely with a wage increase, taking his income from €2m to €3m per year.

Di Maria is two years into his five-year contract with Los Blancos, and had been expecting a financial improvement in his deal last summer.

“I am anxiously awaiting a response,” the 24-year-old told Radio La Red on June 17 2011. “They promised me that if things went well, I could increase [my basic wage].”

The Rosario-born winger missed 20 games for the Spanish champions last season with injury, but still managed to contribute seven goals and 14 assists to the campaign.
