Some questioned the 19-year-old's decision to join the Liga giants, but Varane has proven his critics wrong with a number of impressive performances in his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu side despite appearing in just a handful of games.
"My decision to sign for Madrid and move to La Liga might have looked like a suicide mission to some, but I knew where I wanted to go and why when I made my decision. I never had any doubts," Varane stated to Telefoot.
"Jose Mourinho's comments that he really wanted to work with me made the difference for me. This was instrumental in my decision to move to Real. Plus the guarantee that I would make a lot of progress just training at such a big club."
Varane made 15 appearances in all competitions for Madrid in the 2011-12 campaign.
