The former Sevilla coach has lauded the talent of the 28-year-old winger, and put him at the same level as the Ballon d'Or holder in terms of technical qualityMallorca coach Joaquin Caparros has drawn comparisons between Sevilla attacker Jose Antonio Reyes and Barcelona star Lionel Messi.
The 28-year-old winger returned to los Rojiblancos, where he spent a decade between 1994 and 2004, in January after a frustrating first half of the season at Atletico Madrid.
Caparros, who coached Reyes during his first Sevilla spell, believes that the former Benfica and Arsenal man is one of the most talented players he has worked with.
"What I saw Reyes do I am yet to see anyone else do, except Messi," the Mallorca coach told Marca.
"That kind of vertical play, of picking up the ball in his own half and reaching the other goal...
"That is the Reyes everyone wants, a physical and technical genius, a football talent. Reyes is pure talent."
Reyes failed to reach the heights that many had expected, returning to Spain in 2006 after spending three years in England with Arsenal.
"I think he was not demanding enough with himself [at Arsenal]," Caparros noted. "But I also think that at Sevilla he demands more from himself."
