'To win this many titles, you need a key player' - Barcelona's Pep Guardiola praises Lionel Messi after Uefa Super Cup win over Porto

The Catalan club's boss believes that the Argentine is pivotal to their success and stressed that consistency will be key to retain the La Liga title this season
Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola says that Lionel Messi plays a leading part in the team's success.

With La Liga and the Champions League yet to start, the Catalan club have already added two titles to their cabinet this season after winning the Spanish and Uefa Super Cups in the space of just one week.

Messi was instrumental in the 2-0 victory over Porto on Friday as he netted the opening goal and assisted Cesc Fabregas for the second strike, and Guardiola heaped praise on the diminutive midfielder.

"To win this many titles, you need a key player. And we have Messi. If you add to this the spectacular match the others had...," Guardiola said at a post-match press conference.

The Barcelona coach noted that the club's winning trend can only be explained by the pool of talent on the team, saying: "We are glad. Winning this title was very hard. These players are unrepeatable. I do not get tired of praising them, they have such a competitive soul.

"We win an average of four titles per season because we are lucky enough to have these players."

Despite the club's impressive start to the season, Guardiola is taking nothing for granted and noted the team will have to be at their best all the time in La Liga.

"It is the league, which forces you to play every three to four days, which will say if we are as competitive as last year," he added.

"These players need to demonstrate what the previous ones achieved. One of the coach's tasks is to be alert. A team can fall in a second and to get it back up is really difficult.

"In any case, we have only been together for two weeks and once again we gave a good account of ourselves."
