thumbnail Hello,

With the capital side bolstered by the vast wealth of Qatari investors, there have been innumerable transfer links in the media. Goal.com explores some of the most intriguing

ANALYSIS
by Robin Bairner

Since the final day of May, when the Qatar Investment Authority took 70 per cent control over Paris Saint-Germain, the capital club have been linked with a plethora of players. Reports over the size of les Parisiens’ transfer war chest have ranged from a comparatively modest €50 million all the way up to a bank-busting €150m.

Inevitably, given that ‘transfer silly season’ is upon us, there have been a hoard of rumours circulating around the Parc des Princes outfit, and the press frenzy has only been stoked with the news that Leonardo is set to return to the club in a general manager role.

Already, PSG have flexed their muscle in the transfer market by capturing striker Kevin Gameiro from Lorient for a reported fee of €11 million, while Nicolas Douchez, a highly-rated goalkeeper amongst regular commentators on Ligue 1, has switched to the capital on a Bosman move following a successful spell with Rennes.

Several more names are set to follow, though given the sheer volume of speculation surrounding Antoine Kombouare’s outfit, clearly the vast majority of these rumours are simply speculative. Goal.com will attempt to guide you through the minefield of gossip to give you the inside track of what might happen at PSG in the next two months.

The first big name to be linked with PSG this summer, when the Bulgarian was left out of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad for the Champions League final, he was almost instantaneously associated with a move to Paris. Initially, the French club rebuffed this talk, and so too did the player, but rumours in the tabloid press continue to circulate, and Canal+ journalist Darren Tullet has even indicated that a fee has been agreed.

Les Parisiens could certainly use a name like Berbatov to stamp their name on the European footballing map, and though these whispers were far-fetched at first, the longer they continue, the greater the likelihood of a shock transfer.

Undoubtedly one of the least glamorous names on this list, the Valenciennes centre-back has long been linked with a move to the Francilien club. A hole will need plugged in the heart of the rearguard, as Zoumana Camara is liable to shuffle elsewhere having lost his place in the starting XI last season, and head coach Antoine Kombouare would like to look to the rugged Serbian as a replacement.

Bisevac has played for four years in France since moving from Red Star Belgrade and has largely managed to distinguish himself in the bottom half of the league. Injuries plagued him last season and may have put PSG off a little, as his association with the club appears to have waned somewhat in recent months. Additionally, he’s not the glamour signing the owners are looking for, and Kombouare's lessened say in recruitment makes this a deal unlikely to go ahead.

Not content with simply signing Gameiro, PSG seemingly want to buck up their striking options by adding greater depth to this area of the team. A lack of goals from the bench cost them towards the end of last season, and though the Italian would surely slot into the starting XI with immediacy, by pushing someone else into the dugout, les Parisiens would have greater strength in this area.

The Roma striker may have been linked with the French giants, but it would appear that their sights are set more firmly on club-mate Jeremy Menez, and his addition wouldn’t appear to be a particular priority.

A move away from Bordeaux would appear distinctly possible this summer for the France international midfielder, and PSG have been tentatively linked with his services. Claude Makelele retired at the end of the last campaign, leaving Kombouare with a big void to fill in front of his defence, and the 29-year-old former Lyon man is certainly a candidate.

Big and bullish, Diarra would provide muscle, experience and an aerial threat in the box as well as his simple but effective midfield play. Marseille have been hotly on the tail of the capital-born player, however, and OM should be considered favourites for his signature.

Despite the fact that Inter striker Eto’o has seemingly indicated his desire to go to the Premier League, the press continue to link the striker with a potential move to Paris. Indeed, it has been suggested that he will be in the French capital to meet with Leonardo today (Tuesday), and the subject of the discussions will be a move to the Parc des Princes.

Money is no longer a major obstacle in a transfer – though large wages allied with a €15m transfer fee would appear to be expensive even for the nouveau riche outfit – but a lack of Champions League football is a factor that will be massive for a player who perhaps only has a handful of years left at the top level.

On Tuesday evening, it was reported by reputable outlet Canal+ that PSG had made an ambitious bid for the young Belgian, who half of Europe appears to be chasing at present. The winger has been one of the stars in Ligue 1 over the course of his short career to date and was even named the league's best player last season.

Though LOSC have said that they are prepared to accept an astronomical bid for the talent, it is highly questionable if Hazard would be prepared to take the short journey to Paris in the long-term. Riches may be on offer at the Parc des Princes, but Lille have Champions League football, and in any case, a big money move is virtually guaranteed next summer if it does not materialise this.

With the Brazilian playmaker likely to find game-time hard to come by at the Bernabeu after the startling ascent of Mesut Ozil, there is a great deal of speculation linking the former Ballon d’Or winner with a move abroad. Though the Milanese giants of Inter are leading the pursuit, PSG were also mentioned in a passing breath.

Once again, the lack of elite level play will count heavily against les Parisiens, who cannot even compensate by offering the ability to turn out against glamorous opponents on a weekly basis in Ligue 1. Leonardo’s influence is liable to be telling on occasion, but Kaka still has too much to give for a titanic club than to move to a team at least 12 months away from playing in the Champions League.

A number of Brazilian players have been linked with a potential switch to Paris in the summer, largely because of the links with Leonardo, and rising star Lucas of Sao Paulo is the youngster most readily associated with PSG ahead of Neymar and Ganso, who are probably out of their league at present.

The 18-year-old has twice turned out for his country and is rated as one of the most exciting talents presently playing in Brazil. Even so, the teenager is liable to be another target who proves difficult to capture as he told Infosport last week: “I'm pleased to learn that Leonardo is interested in me, but you know my mind is currently in Sao Paulo. Everything is going well for me here and I want to stay.”

One of the most highly-regarded central midfield players in France, Blaise Matuidi of Saint-Etienne has earned international recognition lately and has long been linked with a move away from les Verts. Initially, a move to England seemed on the cards, but one of Ligue 1’s big guns could now swoop.

The energetic 24-year-old is another candidate to replace Makelele in the heart of the midfield, and though he is a more dynamic player than Diarra, he doesn’t offer the same muscle or experience. Plus, with a €15m asking price, PSG may take the chance to prove that they will not easily be forced into opening their wallets.

On recent evidence, the chase for the Roma winger is going extremely well for Kombouare’s side. Something of a luxury player, Menez can be a little hit-or-miss, but with the retirement of Ludovic Giuly, les Rouge et Bleu need a wideman who is able to complement Nene on the left flank.

The former Sochaux youth is firmly in the viewfinder of PSG, stating on Monday: “The project that has been started at PSG is one that pleases me. If they have the means to become a big team, it could be interesting for me to come and play in Paris.”

Another one of the less renowned names associated with the capital side this summer, but nevertheless a player who could perform a role in the team off the bench should Jeremy Clement depart, as seems likely. Though he spent a fair portion of last season with Auxerre injured, the Congolese player was impressive when he made it to the field.

Still only 23, the physically imposing young man is unlikely to be a major priority for PSG, but he could nevertheless be useful as a squad player, should AJA be prepared to let him depart. The rumours suggesting this move aren’t especially hot, but this is a player whose name doesn’t have the same cachet as the likes of Eto’o.

Presently, PSG only have one senior goalkeeper on their books as Gregory Coupet chose to retire and the unpredictable Apoula Edel was freed at the end of the campaign. Mexican goalkeeper Ochoa was strongly tipped to make a move east from Club America only a few weeks ago, however, after testing positive for Clenbuterol along with four national team-mates, these links have died.

Cleared of all charges, the goalkeeper could be free to move to the Parc des Princes, and ESPN Mexico journalist John Sutcliffe has reported that the custodian is presently in Paris to negotiate a deal. Gennaro Bracigliano represents another option in this area, should no agreement be struck.

During January, the Saint-Etienne star was set for a move to Paris only to miss his plane, leading to a massive fall-out between the France international winger and les Verts. Unhappily for Payet, his failure to be awarded a regular first team berth may cost him as Menez has leapt ahead in the race to sign for PSG.

Should the move for the Roma winger fall through, les Parisiens could return to the former Nantes man, but by that time it could be too late, as Lille are also hovering.

After being a relatively obscure player only a matter of weeks ago, the teenage defender has suddenly become extremely well known due to the transfer war being waged by Manchester United, Real Madrid and now PSG over his signature.

A native of northern France, the 18-year-old, who can also play in midfield, benefitted from regular first-team exposure with Lens last season, but the club’s relegation has made a move inevitable. PSG can readily afford the €10.5m asking price, and should the prodigious teenager feel regular football at the Parc des Princes to be more beneficial than a potentially risky move abroad, this is a transfer that could well be completed. Indeed, some French media sources even had les Parisiens as leading the race on Tuesday, though Madrid have since overtaken them.

Since winning promotion to Ligue 1 with Montpellier, the highly-versatile defender has been one of the top flight’s outstanding young players. Strong and quick, he is ideally suited to the game in Le Championnat. A future in the English Premier League should also be forecast given his attributes, but the 22-year-old has yet to prove himself with one of France’s big clubs, and a shot at PSG may be just what he needs.

Yanga-Mbiwa could offer a great deal to the capital side in terms of quality and also because of his malleability. Though Montpellier would doubtless like to keep hold of the France Under-21 international, if they could get Camara and a healthy-sized cheque in return, it may be a deal they feel is worth making.
