Casillas accepts blame for Zaragoza defeat but insists that Madrid's effort was always there

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has insisted that his team made their best effort despite the 3-2 loss at home to Real Zaragoza on Saturday evening.  

Madrid’s loss to Zaragoza comes on the heels of a 0-2 reverse to Barcelona in the Champions League. But Casillas is adamant that his team tried their hardest to avoid a second home defeat in three days.

"We never gave up. We always believed we could win,” said Casillas to the club’s official website.

“Something unfortunate happened whenever we came close to drawing the match, there was a possible penalty on Kaka, and Benzema hit the crossbar. They killed us with their third goal, but we kept trying. It just didn't happen for us.”

Casillas also praised Zaragoza for their ruthlessness during the game, while accepting the role that his error played in the defeat.

"It's possible that everything that's happened in the last few days was on our minds, but that's no excuse. Zaragoza gave a good performance and capitalised on our mistakes,” he said.

“I'm somewhat angry because the team didn't earn a better result due to a mistake I made, but we're all human and we all make mistakes."

Casillas also expressed his determination for his team to progress to the Champions League Final at the expense of Barcelona. Madrid have a 2-0 deficit going in to the second leg at the Nou Camp.

"We intend to win in Barcelona, we know we are at a disadvantage, but everything is possible in football."
