Valencia coach Unai Emery said that his side rolled out the red carpet for Real Madrid in the first hour of their crushing 6-3 home defeat to the cup winners at the Mestalla

Valencia coach Unai Emery was pulling no punches after watching his side succumb to Copa del Rey winners Real Madrid, who pulled off an outstanding 6-3 win at the Mestalla.

"We made a fool of ourselves,” Emery told reporters after the match on Saturday evening. “The guard of honour for Real Madrid lasted until the 60th minute.

"We lacked the aggression and intensity we needed to win the game. It was our chance and we were thumped. Now we need to concern ourselves with why this has happened.”

Emery admitted that he would love to take a break after such a defeat but added that his job is to now focus on Valencia's next game against Osasuna away from home.

"What I would like most now is to go into hiding for three days but it is my responsibility to start preparations for our game in Osasuna. There is a sense of shame I have not seen before. Our duty is not always to win but to show pride in the team."

The former Almeria coach continued to vent his spleen, saying that the team lacked character and looked more like a side in the bottom six of La Liga than the top four:

"There are three or four defeats this season which I do not want to see a repeat of. Today, we were a disaster. Last season, we lost this game 3-2 but played well. Today, we looked like a team who were fifteenth in the league. We lacked character."
