Barcelona attacker Lionel Messi has urged coach Pep Guardiola to sign a contract extension at the Camp Nou, adding that he could not imagine being at the club without their influential leader.
The Ballon d’Or winner was attending a promotional event for sponsors Adidas today, and he discussed his satisfaction at retaining the honour of being the world’s best player, as well as his hope that Guardiola will commit his long-term future to the Blaugrana.
He remarked of the coach: “He will renew whenever he decides to, but I hope that he will renew and stay with the club. After what he has brought to Barcleona, it is difficult to imagine the club without him.
“I always look for a placeoin the pitch where I can be in contact with the ball, and this is a detail that is in how he wants the team to play.”
Messi added that he felt embarrassed to be caught up in the moment of collecting his second consecutive Ballon d’Or, and forgot to thank his colleagues Xavi and Andres Iniesta, whom he beat to the award.
He continued: “We know the relationship we have, and it will continue to same, that is all we need to know, but I was concentrating so much on the gala, that I forgot about Xavi and Iniesta.
