Goals from Diego Forlan and Tiago set Atletico Madrid on path for a win over Athletic Bilbao, whose home fans had to wait until almost full-time before seeing a consolation from Fernando Llorente.
After ten minutes the visitors were in front. Sergio 'Kun' Aguero, showing good form throughout, dribbled into the box before squaring the ball to Simao. The Portuguese in turn trapped it for Forlan to shoot from next to the penalty spot and past Gorka Iraizoz.
Athletic enjoyed the best of the remainder of the first period, with Fernando Llorente looking especially dangerous.
But heading into the second the first chance fell to Javi Martinez, whose long-range effort wasn't far away after he was set up by Aguero.
Aguero left the pitch injured on the hour mark and Atleti scaled back accordingly, but still managed to put the game almost beyond doubt ten minutes from time. Substitute Diego Costa linked up brilliantly with Simao, who in turn forced a parried save from Iraizoz. Tiago was there to head home the rebound.
With two minutes left Fernando Llorente got on the scoresheet with a cool effort following Oscar de Marcos' through ball, but it wasn't enough to spark a comeback.
