Espanyol veteran Ivan de la Pena could be set for a return to action this Sunday after ten months on the sidelines, according to AS.

The 34-year-old midfielder managed just five appearances last season for the Blanc i Blau with the last of those coming in a Copa del Rey defeat to Getafe on 11 November last year. The former Barcelona star had contemplated retiring before opting to undergo surgery on his right knee but following a lengthy recovery period, finally seems destined to return to competitive action.

"I don't want the headline tomorrow to read that I ponder summoning De la Pena," confessed coach Mauricio Pochettino.

"However he may consider that he can take his chance like the rest of his team-mates. Ivan is fine, training with the group. We will make a decision at the end of the week. I cannot speak on the medical issue, but I see him quite well and training as well with the group. He is training normally."

There were fears that de la Pena would require surgery about six weeks ago but those worries were allayed by club physicians who instead decided upon more conservative treatment on a muscular problem which appears to have been successful.

The Little Buddha is ready for a return to action and could feature against Villarreal at the Madrigal.
