Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta set for contract extension discussions.
Russian giants Rubin Kazan approached San Mames management during the summer transfer window with an attractive offer for the Venzuelan-born stopper, but both club and player rejected the deal, and he delighted the Basque club by stating his intention to stay.
Spanish publication AS reports that Bilbao president Fernando Garcia Macua now intends to enter into negotiations to offer Amorebieta a deal that extends beyond the expiration of his current contract in 2013.
The player’s agent, Gines Carvajal, commented yesterday: “There is something on the table, although he has years to run on his current deal. He is a very important player for the club, they rejected a bid for him, and Athletic Bilbao feel obliged to do something regarding his contract, but we have not discussed it yet."
Carvajal also commented on the 25-year-old’s recent decision to reject international recognition from Venezuela, and commit to Spain.
He added: “He had nothing to gain and much to lose. He has done well and [Vicente] del Bosque can call on him if he continues to demonstrate his quality and strength.”
