Father Backs Spain's Pepe Reina But Argentine Roberto Bonano Puts Victor Valdes On Par With Iker Casillas
Pepe Reina's slip up against Argentina has reignited the debate about who should challenge Iker Casillas for Spain's Number One spot.
By Paul Madden
Ex-Spain, Barcelona & Atletico Madrid custodian Miguel described Reina's trip as a moment of bad fortune and not a goalkeeping error.
"The match against Argentina has been one of the most unpleasant moments. It was a bitter night, especially because you see a team that could win and unfortunately did not. Pepe was very excited because he was going to play an important game against Argentina, and luck was not with him," Reina senior said according to AS.
"Let's make it clear that one thing is a mistake and another thing, like what happened to Pepe, is an unfortunate slip. An error is a poor clearance with the fists, a goalkeeper who cannot come off his line, doesn't use his body or well-placed thumbs and drops the ball like a melon. And this is not the case. He was not nut-megged, nor did it bounce and hit him.
"For me it was misfortune. What happened to Pepe, I do not call it a failure. He must take it well and he is strong mentally and I am sure he has already dealt with it."
Former Argentina international Roberto Bonano has taken a contrasting view however, claiming that Barca's Victor Valdes should be fighting for the number one spot with Real Madrid's Iker Casillas.Bonano, another former Barcelona custodian, is of the opinion that the standards set by Valdes and Reina at club level leave the Barca shot stopper a level above the Liverpool 'keeper.
"I think that Victor is a step above Pepe on what they have done at club level. He has continuity, the results are clear, representing Barca on the world stage," he noted.
"Valdes is on an equal footing with Casillas. They should fight on equal merits for the position. Casillas has 10 years on a high level and with a very consistent level performance. The debate and competition improves the standard of the goalkeeper for Spain."
