Athletic Bilbao defender Markel Susaeta is of the opinion that the team this season has improved from last year, and that they are expecting an improved performance in the Primera Division.

In 2009/10 Los Leones finished in eighth position, having also competed in the Europa League, but the 22-year-old stopper reckons that despite making modest additions to the squad, the additional year’s experience will make them a better team overall.

AS quotes Susaeta as stating, “This team is better than in previous years because we are stronger up front, and the players have more confidence.

“We know that we will have to be strong to defeat Atletico [Madrid], because they too are very confident after winning the Europa League and the European Super Cup. We have to make sure that we seize our opportunities.

A Fernando Llorente header gave the Basque side an opening day win at Hercules, but Susaeta believes that the team must concentrate on eradicating mistakes rather than reflect on their good start to the season.

“We must not think that we have had a good start to the season, because all the while we must try to correct our mistakes. We played well, we won a match, and although it was not a good match, we added the three points, and that is what matters.”
