Barcelona Assistant Manager Tito Vilanova: Versatility Will Be Key To Our Success
Tito Vilanova insists that the adaptability of the Barcelona players helps provide a deeper squad.

Barcelona assistant manager Tito Vilanova reckons an important factor in terms of the team’s depth of squad in the ability of a number of players to play in various positions.
The Blaugrana only have 19 first-team players available for the new season, leading some critics to suggest that coach Pep Guardiola may not have the personnel to challenge on all fronts.
However, Vilanova, who is entering into his third season as Guardiola’s right-hand man at the Camp Nou, believes the adaptability of certain members of the group enhances the strength of the squad.
He said in an interview with El Periodico de Catalunya, “Right now we have 19, but it is basically 24, with four or five players who can cover up to eight positions.
“We play unlike other teams, because we are continually reinventing our squad, and the advantage is that we have spent two years working together and the team knows what we want them to do.”
Vilanova also commented on the employment of Lionel Messi as a central striker this season, saying that the options playing through the centre provides the Argentine with a whole new dimension.
He added, “We we arrived here, it was said that Leo [Messi] was not scoring. I thought it was funny because being near the area is perfect for him. He has options to go inside, outside….everywhere.”
