Sevilla defender Julien Escude has given his assessment of the start of the season, and admitted that although the Champions League exit was difficult to take, the Europa League has a special place in the memories of the club.

Los Nervionenses won back-to-back titles in the former creation of the tournament, the UEFA cup, in 2006 and 2007, but the Andalucian side have dropped down into the Europa League this term as consolation for their defeat to Sporting Braga of Portugal.

Speaking in an interview with AS, the French defender said of competing in Europe’s second competition, “It has given us success and happiness, but it will not be easy. It was said that Sporting Braga were not of a very good standard, but we lost to them twice.

“We must be respectful, but looking ahead, we must now defeat Deportivo and then Paris Saint Germain.”

Escude also commented on the defensive additions of Alexis from Valencia and Martin Caceres on loan from Barcelona, and stated that their arrivals were vital to bolster the back line, particularly after Sebastian Squillaci’s move to Arsenal.

He continued, “When the defence is strong, we can do more things. Alexis and Martin [Caceres] want to win and bring aggressiveness. We needed to strengthen the defence with players of this level."
