Barcelona midfielder Xavi reckons the acquisition of Javier Mascherano will prove to be an inspired signing, one that will improve the club greatly.

After a summer of protracted negotiations, the Blaugrana sealed a deal for the Argentine with Liverpool, with a €21 million fee being exchanged between the teams, seeing off interest from Inter.

Camp Nou playmaker Xavi has been discussing the prospect of another successful season with Mascherano in the team, and in an interview with El Mundo Deportivo, he said, “I do not know him personally, but he seems a great signing who will come in handy. Despite being very young he has extensive experience in international competitions with Argentina.

“It will give us balance and on a personal level I have spoken very highly of him, he is a hard worker and we will be better with Mascherano.”

Xavi also assessed the departure of striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and claimed that although he was sorry to see the Swede depart, he understands the reasons behind the decision to allow him to leave for Milan.

He added, “He left for footballing matters, Pep [Guardiola] has said this very clearly. I’m sorry because we had a good relationship and he was fine in the locker room, but it is the best thing for him is that he has gone to play for another team.”
