I Would Vote For Xavi To Win Ballon D'Or - Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan
Diego Forlan wants the Ballon d'Or, but believes Xavi is worthy of the title.
By Paul Macdonald
Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan has been discussing the candidates for the Ballon d’Or, and stated that although he would dearly love to win the title, if he were given a vote, he would give it to Barcelona playmaker Xavi.
A number of major players have a legitimate case for winning the crown currently held by Lionel Messi, with the likes of Andres Iniesta and Wesley Sneijder also in contention.
Speaking in an interview with Marca, the Uruguayan said of the distinguished award, “I want to win the Ballon d’Or, but if were give the opportunity to vote, I would give it to Xavi.”
Forlan attributes the catalyst for success last season as the arrival of coach Quique Sanchez Flores at the Vicente Calderon, and had appreciative words for the former Valencia tactician, as well as young goalkeeper David de Gea.
“Before Quique came it was a bit chaotic, but he sorted the dressing room. I believe that David de Gea will make history at Atletico Madrid,” he said.
Finally, Forlan said that he was honoured by speculation linking him with Real Madrid, concluding, “I’m flattered that Florentino [Perez] and [Jose] Mourinho are interested in me, but I’m happy at Atletico Madrid.”
