Spain's David Villa Disappointed Not To Break Raul's Goal Record But Insists It Will Come

Dispute as to whether the Barcelona forward has equalled legends 44-goal haul...

Spain, Villa

Record Spain goalscorer David Villa admits he was disappointed not to break Raul's international goal scoring record after equalling the 44-goal mark against Liechtenstein in their opening Euro 2012 qualifier.

The Barcelona forward bagged a brace while strike partner Fernando Torres also scored twice to give the reigning champions a straightforward win over their hosts but Villa had a glorious opportunity to net the record goal late on but saw his strike come back off the crossbar.

However their is a question mark over whether or not he has reached the 44-mark with a number of publications in Spain, including AS and Marca, insisting he still sits on 43.

El Guaje had been credited with a goal in a pre-World Cup friendly win over Poland in Murcia in June but it appears that defender Dariusz Dudka may have got the final touch but the 28-year-old striker is unconcerned as to whether he has 43 or 44 because he is adamant the record is only a matter of time.

"It's a shame, because I had a good chance to score even in the last minute of the game, but the ball came off the bar. It was a shame, but there is no rush and it is important that the team was good, we have performed well and got a good result here, that after all is what counts. Now, even a friendly, we must also win against Argentina," he told AS afterwards before insisting he will score many more goals for la Furia Roja.

"It's all the same to me, there is one goal against Poland under doubt but it's not important. I hope to continue in the national team for a long time to come and if I play more games I will score more goals. The important thing was that the team achieved the victory."
