Mallorca coach Michael Laudrup believes that his side’s season starts in earnest when they face Sporting Gijon in their second Primera Division clash of the season.

The Islanders managed to hold Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid to a goalless draw at San Moix for a positive start to the season at the cash-strapped club.

However, speaking in a press conference this week, the former Barcelona and Real Madrid coach believes that the Sporting Gijon encounter will be the test of his team’s credentials.

He said: “Our season begins against Sporting, in our next match. The next four games, of which three of them are within seven days, are very important to know where we stand.

“We were looking for two players per position in the transfer market, and we have not fully achieved this, but we have three strikers, which is interesting both for me and for the rest of the group.”

Laudrup also commented on the acquisition of Fernando Cavenaghi, who joins on loan from Bordeaux, adding that he can bring much to the team.

He said of the Argentine: “He is a player who scores goals, he has experience, and we would have liked him to go into the team, but he played 45 minutes after spending only 48 hours with the club, and that is not easy.”
