Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta has hit back at claims his spending during his tenure in charge at the Blaugrana was over-extravagant, insisting simply: “I wanted to keep the players' lives comfortable.”

Laporta has come in for extensive criticism recently regarding his lavish expenditure during his period at the Camp Nou, which has left the club in a far from stable financial position.

However, speaking to television channel TV3, Laporta maintains that he had the interests of the club, and in particular the players, at heart.

He said: “I wanted to make life comfortable for the players. We are well aware of everything that was done. They talk about the gifts that we bought players, and the awards they received for winning, but the titles are appreciated.

“It was a matter of respect for the professionals who did a very good job. We tried to make life comfortable for all players, because they earned it.”

The allegations against Laporta came to light upon the arrival of Sandro Rosell, his replacement as president, who suggested the club’s financial reports were inaccurate and that the club has suffered substantial loss during Laporta’s final year in charge.
