Atletico Madrid coach Quique Sanchez Flores has been impressed with the development of Filipe Luis since he joined the club during the summer.

The Brazilian full-back joined from Deportivo la Coruna for a fee of €15 million as part of Flores’ restructuring of his defensive line for the season ahead.

However, the 25-year-old suffered a leg break midway through last season, and although he was able to return to action, he is still fighting his way back to full fitness.

Speaking in a press conference at the club yesterday after a behind-closed-doors friendly, Flores remarked of the player: “Filipe is doing exactly what we had in mind, today he took part in an intense 90 minutes and that is important when you are looking to regain a high level.”

Flores also said that he was looking forward to the season ahead and is content with the squad that he has at his disposal.

He added: “This is a team that has been growing for some time, we have invested well this year, and we are happy because we have a compact squad.

“The goal is to return to the Champions League and from there, to dream.”
