Atletico Madrid Defender Diego Godin: Assess Our La Liga Challenge In December
Diego Godin is delighted with Atletico Madrid's start to the season, but is wary of title talk so early in the campaign.
By Paul Macdonald
Atletico Madrid stopper Diego Godin has commented on his side’s positive start to the season, but refused to be drawn on talk of them being title rivals to Real Madrid and Barcelona, saying: “We will see where we are in December.”
Los Colchoneros swooped to secure the former Villarreal central defender in order to bolster their back line, and the Uruguayan has enjoyed a solid start, being involved in the defeat of Inter in the European Super Cup and thrashing Sporting Gijon 4-0 on matchday 1 of La Liga.
Speaking to journalists yesterday, Godin passed comment on the season ahead, and said the current target is to improve on last year, but that may be re-evaluated come the end of the year.
He said: “Clearly, we have started the season well, after winning the Super Cup. I am excited because I won a title in my first official game with Atletico.
"The season will be a long road and we must be consistent. Real Madrid and Barcelona are in front, but it is clear that the target is to be a step above last year. Everyone talks about the league but the year is too long. We can tell where we are in December.
"I have come here to win and the squad have made things easier. In addition, the presence of [Diego] Forlan has helped me.”
Atletico’s next outing after the international break will be a trip to San Mames to face Athletic Bilbao.
