Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has issued a message of encouragement to la Masia graduate Jeffren Suarez, insisting that he wants him to become the "new Pedro".
Pedro had been on the periphery of the Blaugrana first team for two seasons before breaking through in style last season, becoming the first player to score in six different tournaments in a single season, as well as gaining a Spanish international call-up and a place in La Roja’s World Cup starting line-up.
Guardiola believes that Jeffren could manage a similar achievement this season, and publication Sport reports that Pep has told the 22-year old: “I want you to be the new Pedro, but it all depends on you. Do not move – remain at Barcelona.”
The Venezuelan-born wide man, who has six caps for Spain at under-21 level, is likely to be given more of an opportunity in the first team this season as a result of Barcelona’s smaller squad, and also with the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thierry Henry from the forward positions.
To date, Jeffren has only made 21 appearances for the first team, but managed 18 of those last season, and netted two crucial goals in La Liga during the title-run in that helped the club win back-to-back titles.
