Athletic Bilbao have suffered a double injury blow, with Gaizka Toquero and Igor Gabilondo ruled out of action after sustaining injuries.

Coach Joaquin Caparros hoped that his players would make it through the training sessions during the current international break unscathed, but both players have suffered significant knocks which cast their participation in the next league match, against Atletico Madrid on September 12, into doubt.

Toquero picked up a sprained ankle after falling awkwardly during the 1-0 defeat of Hercules at the weekend, and although he thought he would be able to resume training as normal this week, the medical staff at San Mames continue to be concerned with the level of swelling.

The 26-year-old, should the injury not improve in the coming days, may be out of action for up to a month, but much will depend on the development of the injury in the next few days.

Gabilondo, meanwhile, faces at least two weeks out of action. Tests on a muscle complaint found that the left-winger had suffered a slight tear of his left thigh muscle, and he will be out of action for up to two weeks.

Both players are extremely unlikely to be involved in the visit of los Colchoneros, but Gabilondo may recover in time for the trip to Sporting Gijon the following weekend. Toquero’s current prognosis is slightly longer, with the match versus Barcelona at the end of the month a more realistic target.
