Barcelona director Andoni Zubizarreta has admitted that the Catalans made a €40 million offer to sign Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal.
Technical director Andoni Zubizarreta has now explained that Barcelona made a €40 million offer for the playmaker, but that Arsenal refused to negotiate, thus making the transfer impossible to instigate.
"Both the club and the player did as much as possible. Our second offer was €40m. However, from the moment Arsenal said they didn’t want to negotiate, we respected their position," said Zubizarreta on the official Barcelona website.
"We would have liked to have signed him but we weren’t able to negotiate. It wasn’t a disappointment, as it was simply impossible.
"Thanks to the conversation,s we have re-established contact with Arsenal though."
In the end, Barcelona opted to sign Javier Mascherano from Liverpool to strengthen their midfield.
