Valencia coach Unai Emery has explained that the signing of Marius Stankevicius was required to strengthen the squad following the departure of Alexis to Sevilla.
The former Getafe defender moved to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan last week in a €5 million deal, and speaking on his blog on Los Che’s website, Emery admitted than an extra player in his squad was necessary for the club to challenge on all fronts.
“We did not want to stay with a smaller squad following the departure of Alexis, who was sold to Sevilla.
“Stankevicius was a market opportunity that Valencia could not miss, because he is an experienced and versatile player who is a welcome addition.”
Emery also thanked the Mestalla faithful for leaving “constructive criticism” on his newly inaugurated column at the website, with the fans particularly asking about the participation of David Albelda and Mehmet Topal.
The coach maintained that the pair are set to be “major players who will have time to play, because one brings experience, and the other youth.”
The coach also noted that he expects both Roberto Soldado and Jeremy Mathieu to be fit in time for the club’s next match at home to Racing Santander.
