Osasuna defender Nacho Monreal will replace Barcelona's Carles Puyol in the Spain squad for their forthcoming Euro 2012 qualifier against Liechtenstein and friendly match against Argentina.

Puyol picked up a calf injury in the warm up prior to Barca's 3-0 win over Racing Santander at El Sardinero on Sunday night and having been examined by Spain medical staff it has been decided that he will take no part in the upcoming games, instead returning to barcelona to recover.

The void in Vicente del Bosque's squad will be filled by 24-year-old left back Monreal. Thus far he has two caps for la Furia Roja, the last of which was won in a World Cup qualifier against Armenia in October last year.
