Barcelona playmaker Andres Iniesta has hailed the club’s “perfect” start to the season after the World Cup winner helped destroy Racing Santander 3-0 at El Sardinero.

The diminutive midfielder laid on a goal for Lionel Messi before himself scoring a wonderful lobbed volley from 30 yards, and the Verdiblancos had no answer to the champions.

The 26-year-old was speaking on Spanish sports programme Esports COPE, and he remarked: “It was the first game, and we could not ask for much more. I am delighted that we won. Rather than look to others it is necessary that we concentrate on ourselves. The result was perfect and we are feeling good.”

Iniesta also assessed the performance of one new arrival, David Villa, while also looking forward to the debut of their latest signing, Javier Mascherano.

He added: “He [Villa] plays the game well, moves well, goes into space, and has the goal in his sights. He is a goalscorer and having him is a very big leap in quality. I hope he scores a lot of goals.

“[Signing Masherano] is a great boost. He is a leader in the Argentina team, and he will come in handy because he not only defends, but has great ball skills. It is a high profile move for us.”
