Sporting Gijon coach Manuel Preciado has suggested that Atletico Madrid may be contenders to challenge Barcelona for the Primera Liga crown, following their impressive four goal demolition of his side at the Vicente Calderon.

Jurado opened the scoring for the hosts before a Diego Forlan brace and a fin late strike from Simao completed the rout for the newly crowned UEFA Sup Cup winners.

"We would have liked to play better and gotten a good result but the opponent is a great team that swept us aside. I can only congratulate the guys for the defeat not being so immense. Atletico are an impressive team. I thought Quique [Flores] would rest a few players but he didn't," he said afterwards as quoted by AS.

"We had chances but they have generated numerous opportunities and did the damage. They have strengthened excellently. I still think Barca are a step above, but Atletico may be an alternative."

Despite the opening defeat, Preciado is hopeful for the season ahead for his side.

"In fifteen days we face Mallorca and we have to adjust more. The good news is that we have fifteen days to work. I like to see the glass as half full. Surely the players will want to respond. I'm happy with all new players. They have not come to play one game but to play an entire league," he commented.
