Hercules Boss Esteban Vigo Rues Defensive Error In Athletic Bilbao Loss
The coach has vowed his team will not make a similar mistake again...
By Paul Macdonald
Hercules coach Esteban Vigo rued his side’s lack of concentration as a Fernando Llorente goal allowed Athletic Bilbao to leave Alicante with the points.
The Spanish international was allowed freedom in the area to nod home a 46th minute winner, and put a dampener on Hercules’ big day back in the top division for the first time in 14 years.
Speaking after the match, Vigo believed his team did not deserve to lose, and that they must eradicate mistakes from their game if they are to survive in La Liga.
He stated: “The mistake cannot happen again. It was a defensive error that led to the only goal, from a set piece.
“I am happy despite the result because the players worked hard, although we did not create too many chances.”
Hercules are reportedly still in negotiations to bring Juventus striker David Trezeguet to the club after the Frenchman left Italy, and Fenerbahce forward Dani Guiza is also thought to be a target, as they look to build a top Primera Division team.
Vigo refused to comment though, adding: “I do not know how the negotiations [with Trezeguet] have gone. I hope to have all of my staff available to me soon.”
