Athletic Bilbao coach Joaquin Caparros has declared his delight after Los Leones began their 2010-11 Primera Division campaign with a solid 1-0 victory away to promoted Hercules.

Star striker Fernando Llorente was the difference maker, scoring two minutes into the second half to hand the Basque side the ideal start to the new season, simultaneously condemning the Alicante team to an unwanted loss on their inauguration into the new league season.

Speaking in a press conference after the match,  he said: “It was an easy match, but against a team with the highest motivation, who expected much from the match.

“It was a classic early season match, and there has not been much good football to talk about. We managed the game very well.”

Caparros added that the strategy of his team, planned beforehand, proved to be pivotal in his side’s victory.

He stated: “I’m very pleased for the win against a complicated rival. We are a major team and we have performed to our strengths.”

Caparros’ team face Atletico Madrid in their next outing, at San Mames on September 12, after next weekend's international break.
