Valencia coach Unai Emery admitted that his side had provided the opening day win that he had been looking for as Los Che defeated Malaga 3-1 in Andalucia.

New signing Aritz Aduriz opened the scoring before Uruguayan Sebastian Fernandez equalised on the stroke of half-time. However, a second half double in the space of four minutes from Joaquin settled the tie, to hand Emery’s side a vital victory.

Discussing the encounter with journalists afterwards, Emery said: "The team from the beginning has arrived with the mentality that we sought to gain from last season. There was a period when Malaga pressed and had the opportunity to get ahead, but we had control of the ball and we have generally been higher."

He added: “Now we must be prudent. We have just begun the season, it will be long, and the most important step is the one that the team have provided today.

“We wanted to win to ensure that we have that confidence to progress with our work.”

Valencia’s next league match after the Spanish international break will be at home to Racing at the Mestalla on September 12.
