Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta has declined the opportunity to represent Venezuela, the country of his birth, at international level.
The highly-rated 25-year-old centre back, who is understood to be a target of Russian side Rubin Kazan, was widely expected to pledge his allegiance to la Vinotinto, having expressed his desire to play for the South Americans and was selected in the squad for upcoming friendlies against Colombia and Ecuador but has since decided not to make himself available to his homeland.
Instead, following a conversation with los Leones president Fernando Garcia Macua on Friday, it has emerged that Amorebieta will maintain interest in playing senior internationals for world & European champions Spain, having represented la Furia Roja at Under 19 level.
"Athletic, when questions of any nature are raised we advise our players, to protect them and make them see things. Is this good for the club? I think it is best for Fernando [Amorebieta], no doubt. His desire to commit to the Spanish [Football] Federation means it's not possible to join the Venezuelan Federation," Macua was quoted as saying by Marca.
